Improve your Windows boot and operating speed. Follow this guide.

Windows 10 is the operating default of most of home P.C. users. For better or worse we have all been made 'use' to the update. That said even with the improvements there are a lot things happening on the new OS that can dramatically reduce the speed of your computer hardware. This is meant to be a simply guide on how to speed things up. Of course if you are not confident in your skills you can have one of our expert technicians optimize your computer for you.

The windows 10 operating system was designed on a 64-bit architecture and therefore doesn't play that well with computers that are more than 7 years old. Which is when the technology started to take more of the market then the old 32-bit systems that dominated home users computers.

If your computer is older than 7 years old it may be a good time to invest in new hardware. There are plenty of great options available depending on your specific needs. Our technical advisers would be glad to help you pick one and transition your data.

If you want to try to optimize your windows 8.1 to 10 software here is a good starting point:

Step 1) Close unused background programs.

The fast way to accomplish this is to save your work. Word documents and other items you may be in the middle of and then restart your computer. This will clear the ram of programs that are not in your start-up process. To restart your computer click the windows icon in the lower left corner, hover over the option that says 'shut-down' to your right and select the 'restart' option. Depending on what you have open this shouldn't take more than a minute or two to process.

After you have rebooted any apps you use on a regular basis should be checked for updates. Often new software versions will help improve their operating efficiency in the latest operating systems.

Step 2) Clean up your start-up list.

The start-up list is typically used to start programs that are designed to run in the background of your computer. So you won't necessarily see them running but they are there tying up internet bandwidth and hogging local resources like your computers ram. Here is how you can disable many of these:

·     Pres (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) then select the tab labeled 'Task manager'.

·     In the Task Manager, select 'More Details', then select the 'Startup' Tab.

·     To stop any of the listed programs from starting automatically, select the program, then select 'Disable'.

The programs that take up the most resources will say 'high' under the 'startup impact' column on the right. Disable anything you know you are not using on a regular basis. Good examples of commonly found hogs are Skype, Adobe Updater, and McAfee application updater. Any programs you are not familiar with you should leave alone.

Step 3) Check your disk space

Computer disk space operates the opposite of your gas tank. The more empty it is the better off you are. Using your computer tends to eat up space at a pretty rapid pace these days because of all the rich media you accumulate while browsing the web. To see a lift from cleaning out your junk follow these steps:

·     Click the windows icon in the lower left

·     Type "Free up"

·     You should see 'Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files' as the top option. Click on it.

·     The Disk Cleanup app should start. You will see it scan drive C by default, unless you have more than one drive. In which case you can scan both.

·     Check the options for 'downloaded program files', 'Temporary Internet Files', 'Debug Dump Files' and anything else that has a lot of data used.

·     Click 'Okay'

If you have done all of this correctly you should see an increase in your computer boot times and speed. If you want to speak to one of our friendly computer technicians, or have your computer professionally optimization, feel free to contact us.
